What are warning signs of a cooling system problem?

If your car overheats, then major engine problems could arise, which makes it very important that your cooling system is functioning optimally. Automotive cooling systems are made up of various components, such as radiators, thermostats, water pumps, cooling fans, and hoses. When you first notice a symptom of cooling system trouble, you'll want to bring it to a mechanic's attention. At Greg Clark Automotive Specialists, our local mechanics are experts at cooling system repair in the greater Phoenix area.

Common Symptoms of Cooling System Failure

Oftentimes, engines overheat due to leaks in the cooling system. If you check your coolant level and see that it has become worryingly low, then you could have a leak. Another potential sign of a leak is that your coolant warning light is illuminated. A symptom of an internal coolant leak is that a lot of white exhaust smoke is coming from your tailpipe. This could mean that you have a blown head gasket. With an external coolant leak, you may see bright green fluid on the ground where you've been parked. It's also possible that your coolant is a different color such as pink or yellow. If you have a coolant leak, then fluid pressure can drop, which in turn causes your coolant's boiling point to lower. As a result, steam could start to billow out from beneath your hood.

Another sign of cooling system trouble is that your temperature gauge has climbed into the red zone, which could be a precursor to a major problem. If you notice your temp gauge is in the danger zone, then you should pull into a parking lot when you safely can and call the shop to explain what's happening. Then you can get professional advice on whether it seems safe to drive your car any further, or if you should instead get a tow to the shop.
